The Complete Guide to Dental Implants

Dental implants give you the freedom to live your life on your terms.

If you’ve struggled with dentures, temporary dental bridges, or damaged and unattractive teeth, then dental implants are the solution.

What Are Dental Implants?

dental-implants.jpgPermanent dental implants are a permanent solution to missing, dead or damaged teeth. The titanium dental implant ‘root’ is anchored in the jawbone. Then, lifelike prosthetic teeth are inserted on to the implants, creating a stable and attractive set of teeth. This can be for one, a few, or all of your teeth.

What Are Dental Implants Made Of?

There are two parts that make up dental implants. The ‘root’ implant is made from titanium as it’s strong, resistant to corrosion, lightweight and accepted readily by the body. Crucially, it also bonds and encourages the bone to fuse, making the implant very strong.

The visible tooth section is usually made from a ceramic or porcelain material that mimics tooth density and structure.

How Strong Are Dental Implants?

When the implants have been inserted correctly, they are incredibly strong. While there are variations due to the density of the jawbone and the existing teeth around them, implants should be able to withstand more pressure than your natural tooth.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

In general, dental implants have a success rate of 98%. Once installed and healed, you need to ensure you continue basic oral care and then they can last up to 25 years. But this is influenced by how well you look after them. Flossing and brushing daily, having regular dentist visits, and avoiding biting on pens or using your teeth as an opening device will all help to increase their life span.

How Long Does the Implant Procedure Take?

Dental implants procedureThe entire process, from start to finish, can take as little as a few months.

The initial consultation will be with your dentist, who will examine your teeth and run through the process with you. This is a quick visit.

The next visit is the implant insertion, which takes up to two hours. The mouth is anaesthetised, and some of the gum area is removed so the surgeon can access the jawbone. A hole is drilled in the jawbone. The implant is inserted, a healing cap placed over the top, and the gum stitched to encourage quick healing.

The bone then fuses with the titanium post. This takes several months, and you’ll be fitted with a temporary restoration, so you won’t be missing any teeth in the interim.

The third visit is when the healing cap is removed, and an abutment is installed. The tooth is then attached to the abutment and the process is complete. This visit will take one to two hours.

How Painful is the Procedure?

The actual procedure itself is not painful as there will be full local anaesthetic. After the procedure, you will be advised to take over-the-counter pain relief. Most people report mild discomfort but if you follow post-surgery care, don’t smoke and stick to soft foods, the recovery should be quick.

What Are the Advantages of Dental Implants?

There are a range of advantages of dental implants. If you’re switching from dentures, you will love the security, stability and ease of your day to day life. They are:

  • Durable and hard-wearing
  • Natural looking for a beautiful smile
  • Strong and stable, allowing you to eat what you want
  • Effective for oral and jaw health, holding your other teeth in position and stopping jawbone erosion
  • Solidly implanted so there’s no slipping, giving you precise speech with no slurring or mumbling
  • Attractive, helping your confidence and self-esteem
  • Highly convenient
  • A lifetime solution instead of a series of temporary ones

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

It depends on what process you’re getting done. Some people need tooth extraction and there is the option of bone grafts into the jaw if needed. If everything is straightforward, average costs for dental implants in NZ are as follows.

  • A single dental implant will cost approximately NZ$5000 to NZ$6000.
  • Two to three teeth aren’t just a straight double- or tripling of the single cost, as only one or two implants may be needed for multiple teeth. In general, it will cost somewhere between NZ$11,000 and N$13,000.
  • Cost for a full set of upper or lower implants vary greatly, but in general will be in the region of NZ$18,000 to NZ$30,000.
  • The average cost of All-On-Four full dental implants is simply about twice that of a full set of upper or lower implants.
