Tooth Replacement

Our Dental Services » Tooth Replacement
The loss of a tooth, especially a front tooth, can be an emotionally devastating experience. Few people realise, however, that in addition to compromised aesthetics, gaps left when teeth are lost can cause drifting and tilting of adjacent teeth, which in turn can lead to decay, gum disease, and jaw problems. The loss of a tooth, therefore, has both aesthetic and functional consequences.

Dr Sauer and Dr Worthington are both highly experienced in the cosmetic replacement of missing teeth.

Our aim is to replace teeth to maximise aesthetics and function, so that it will seem that the teeth were never lost.

We replace most missing teeth with fixed bridges (‘bridges’) or dental implants.

Bridges

A bridge is a restoration whereby an artificial tooth or teeth is/are attached to crowns placed on two or more adjacent teeth. Bridges are either made entirely from porcelain, or from porcelain bonded to a metal substructure. Bridges can be placed alone or in conjunction with porcelain veneers and crowns as part of a greater dental enhancement. Several examples of bridges placed by Dr Sauer can be viewed in our Before and After Gallery.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants are titanium screws which can be placed into the jaw bone to replace missing tooth roots. Crowns, bridges and dentures can then be attached to the implants to replace the missing teeth. Dental implants are therefore a treatment option for nearly every patient who needs teeth replaced – from patients who have lost one tooth to patients with no teeth left at all.

The replacement of missing teeth with implant-retained crowns/bridges/dentures requires both the expertise of a skilled surgeon to place the implants and a skilled cosmetic dentist to place the restorations on top. It is very rare to find both practitioners within the one dental practice, so patients usually are sent to numerous different locations on several occasions to consult with the requisite surgeons and dentists. At Dental Artistry we offer the services of both a world-class dental implant surgeon (Dr Worthington) and a world-class cosmetic dentist (Dr Sauer). This obviates the need for our patients to visit different practices in order to have their dental implant treatment completed. Dr Sauer and Dr Worthington work in close conjunction to optimize each patient’s aesthetic and functional outcome.

A major advantage of offering a fully integrated implant service in one facility is that many of our patients can be treated with ’same day teeth’. That means that your failing tooth or teeth can be extracted and replaced with an implant-retained crown or bridge at the one appointment. Even patients with full dentures can have their implants placed and restored on the same day!

Implant-retained restorations can be placed alone or in conjunction with porcelain veneers and crowns as part of a greater dental enhancement.

One tooth missing
A dental implant is often the best treatment method to replace a single lost tooth. Unlike a bridge, an implant-retained crown does not rest on neighbouring teeth; it is a discrete individual unit. The adjacent teeth therefore are not filed down, and they maintain their structural integrity. The teeth are also not joined together as they are with a bridge. In Dr Worthington’s hands the placement of a single tooth implant is a remarkably simple process, and most procedures can be completed within half an hour. In many cases a crown can be affixed to the implant at the same appointment so that the patient leaves our practice with a brand new tooth.

Several teeth missing
Dental implants are often the only alternative to dentures in patients missing more than one tooth in a row. The placement of a bridge is not advisable in the case of a long edentulous (tooth-free) span, as it places excess strain on the adjacent teeth. In many cases a bridge can be affixed to the implants at the same appointment as the implant surgery so that the patient leaves our practice with brand new teeth.

All teeth missing
Dental Implants are a godsend for people wearing full dentures to replace their upper teeth, lower teeth, or both. Full dentures frequently move during talking, eating and mouth opening, causing both embarrassment and discomfort to the wearer. Full dentures also make chewing very difficult. The placement of dental implants into the jaw bone can easily restore a toothless mouth to ideal aesthetics and function. Two to six implants are usually placed, and the teeth anchored securely to them. In the past this involved major surgery, stitches and approximately two weeks without teeth. Today, revolutionary computer-guided surgery allows Dr Worthington to place up to six implants within an hour using a keyhole technique and no stitches. Teeth can be placed on the implants on the same day, and post-operative pain and swelling is negligible, meaning that patients can chew their dinner that night with their new, secure teeth.
